You’re probably thinking of polyurethanes, they just can’t last, they’re naturally pretty volatile.As to silicones, it depends mostly on the purity and the kind of curing agent or catalyst that was used. Platinum cure is pretty much standard these days in art, and it will last for maybe 3 to 5 decades under normal conditions, very stable against oxygen and UV exposure. There are cheaper catalysts, but they do cause an accelerated breakdown.
